That's still 16 minutes of footage where we can witness Dolph Lundgren in his very first contemporary part (Frank Castle as cop with family life), a minor deleted scenes, AND a more dramatic alternate climax ending with Dolph going crazy à la Andrew Scott yelling the kid to "blow his head off"!

I know... I like the end... that end with the boy sums up exactly why Robert Mark Kamen understood the themes of the books more than any other screenwriter... it works for the character on several levels.

Robert Kamen just produced the film and rewrote just a bit of Yakin's original script, adding the ultimately omitted prologue etc. But 80 or 90% of the movie is Boaz Yakin's, who was the real fan of the comic book. Kamen had just made a deal to work with New World and New World happened to own the rights to the character and Yakin was a friend (not anymore) of Kamen and had wrote the script on spec... Kamen didn't have much clue.

By the way the reason the ending had to be reshot was because it was found too harsh by the MPAA (and on the other hand they also needed more fighting between Lundgren and Krabbe so they re-staged it months later in L.A.)

I'm still looking forward to the UK version... yes, it's the theatrical version, but seeing as I am old enough to remember seeing this on the big screen and living with the heavily cut UK VHS for so many years, I'm happy to get what I'm given for now

By checking the UK edition from Anchor Bay again, I realized that the 2.0 LPCM track is actually a MONO mix, from which has been made an awfully spacialized 5.1 "DTS-HD Master Audio" track. In comparison the Dolby Digital 2.0 ("compressed" or not) of the German Koch Media 3-discs edition sounds infinitely better and is probably closer to the original stereo mix (and also likely the reason why Koch Media cancelled the MA track at the last minute when they realized the kind of material they were originally sent).

What's the deal with the BD/2DVD German set? I've searched on German Amazon and elsewhere but can't find find it for sale. Can anyone supply a listing link please, even if there isn't currently one on there?

Germany's a bit funny for Amazon. They don't sell items of a certain rating because of the laws there and there are several other little niggles. We see it daily when we add releases hence why some don't have the Amazon DE picture to the right of the specs (viewable only if you turn adblock off).

I found a copy on eBay but expensive:

A search of the EAN chucks up other possibilities:

I work away a lot but I will reply to all PM's within a few days so please have patience!

Hmm... the film's quite fun but I'm not gonna pay owt like the prices that kept coming up. I did find a listing on UK Amazon, though predictably there are none for sale: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Punisher-UNCUT-Mediabook-Blu-ray-DVD/dp/B00CNPYGVO
It's disappeared completely off Koch's website but no surprise there. Oh well, maybe one day.
Thanks for your help Sam.

Great news, the new German steelbook seems like it will feature the unrated/uncut (not workprint) version entirely in HD (while the previous uncut version was edited from SD clips from the Japanese laserdisc) 8)

SwissHD

The Disc will NOT be the same as the 3 disc unrated release that Koch Media already made 3 years ago.

Koch was able to locate an old 35mm Theatrical Print of the unrated Version in France.
They scanned this at 2K and took only the Unrated parts from it and inserted them in the existing R-Rated HD Master to create a proper Unrated Version.
So for the first time ever the Unrated Cut will be presented in High Definition from start to finish!
The Old Disc had the Unrated Inserts only upscaled from SD Footage (japan Laserdisc) in there which looked pretty crappy because of the change from Real HD to SD Upscale.
So big change for the better is coming with the new Disc 8)

Will have to double-dip on this one and the Australian release (for new interviews with Dolph and Goldblatt)...
