Dawn of the Dead (1978) Blu-rays UPDATED

Postby Darrel_Griffin » 14 Jan 2020 15:01

Dawn of the Dead (1978) Blu-ray page needs a bit of tidying up.

1. On the standard (2K) Blu-ray page:
http://dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=11797

Blu-ray B Italy - Koch Media 4K 6 disc Editionn

disc 2 is the Dario Argento Cut (a.k.a European Cut), NOT the Director's Cut

2. On the 4K UHD page:
http://dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=43418

the Dario Argento Cut (a.k.a. European Cut) is referred to as: European Cut.

But on the standard (2K) Blu-ray page:
http://dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=11797

at different places on the page it is referred to variously as:

European Cut
European version
Argento Cut
Dario Argento Cut
European Dario Argento Cut.

I propose this should be tidied up to make it more consistent, otherwise readers may find it confusing.

3. On both the standard (2K) and 4K pages:

Blu-ray B Italy - Koch Media 4K 6 disc Edition

disc 3 is mostly pillarboxed (i.e. roughly 1.33:1 full frame), NOT windowboxed.

Do note though that the opening and closing credits ARE windowboxed, and occasionally some other shots are also windowboxed, while many shots have very slight borders top and bottom (it varies from shot to shot). Also note that the rounded corners of the camera gate are visible in many shots, and occasionally the circular edge of the lens assembly is visible, creating large black areas in the corners of the frame. All of this strongly suggests it was never intended to be presented this way.

A few extra issues, mostly things I overlooked first time round:

1. Typing error. On the standard (2K) Blu-ray page:
http://dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=11797

Blu-ray B Italy - Koch Media 4K 6 disc Edition

disc 3 should be: European Cut, NOT European Cut Cut

2. On the 4K UHD page:
http://dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=43418

disc 4 should be: US Theatrical Cut

(the correct name is already in the soundtrack options, but needs to be changed in the disc contents, and also in the CUTS section)

3. On both the 2K and 4K pages, change most instances of "Extended Cut" / "Extended version" -> "Director's Cut",
including under the soundtrack options, but with the following exceptions:

General Notes part (1.), where "Extended version" should remain as part of the list of alternate names.

The Austrian XT Video "Extended Version" releases should keep their names for all parts of the page where they are mentioned, as it forms part of the names of the products. One of them can be seen on amazon.de, ASIN: B07VFQMGHZ

4. On the 2K page, change all 5 instances of "US Theatrical Version" -> "US Theatrical Cut":

1 under the UK Arrow release
1 in the General Notes part (2.)
3 for the Austrian XT Video release: 1 in the list of releases at the top, 1 in the details for the item, and 1 in the CUTS section.

For the latter, initially I thought it might be part of the name of the product, but it seems not to be. It can be seen on amazon.de, ASIN: B07WLBRD5F
It is referred to as "US-Kinofassung: Romero Cut".

5. It might also be worth copying the whole of the General Notes section from the 2K page to the 4K page.

Updated again. By the way there is no such thing as a "2K Blu-ray".

Thanks. By the way I noticed the DVD page for this movie is also pretty messy, but I haven't worked out any details. Good luck if you feel like tackling it, although I don't blame you if you don't! I expect most people who are interested in this movie will want to get it in HD or above, so the DVD page will probably now be of limited value.

I mentioned the "2K Blu-ray" page, with the 2K sometimes in brackets, in an attempt to distinguish the standard Blu-ray page from the "Blu-ray 4K" page for the purpose of clarity, rather than for strict accuracy. Technically I don't think there is such a thing as a "Blu-ray 4K" either, as the official name is "Ultra HD Blu-ray", marketed as "4K Ultra HD".

Apologies for delay - I've not been online for a few days.

One thing I was going to mention was the different 'general notes' (compared with the Blu-ray page), but it looks like you've already updated that.

The main other thing is a similar issue regarding various alternate names being used for the same versions e.g.

"US theatrical cut" / "US theatrical version"

and

"Argento Cut" / "Dario Argento Cut" / "European Cut"

I think I've fixed it enough.
