Protector, The (1985)--2014 Japanese blu-ray ADDED

Postby Van_Beek » 05 Jan 2019 18:32

There were TWO Japanese blu-rays of this movie released: one in 2011, and the other in 2014. THESE specs are for the 2014 version. Rewind has the specs listed for the 2011 version. And unlike the 2011 blu-ray, the 2014 blu-ray actually has the true ORIGINAL "Extended Japanese Version" in high-definition! The "Extended Japanese Version" of the 2011 blu-ray was an amateurishly-created piece of trash.

I want to apologize in advance if anything listed here seems excessively detailed! I do NOT expect EVERYTHING I wrote to be listed word-for-word on Rewind. But I just figured all of you would be interested to know about this release!

Notes
The blu-ray comes with 2 different Japanese-language booklets describing the film, its development, and release (I don't know this for certain since I don't know Japanese, but I'm 99% certain that it's safe to assume that). The booklet also shows various promotional material used for the movie in Japan. There are also some "movie cards" included.

About the Extended Japanese Version
    1. THIS is the Japanese blu-ray that has the Extended Japanese Version in FULL HD. There are various speckles, scratches, and "cigarette burns", indicating that this was restored from a print. Nonetheless it has been REMASTERED into TRUE HD and it's very high quality.
    2. The Extended Japanese version can be described as an "extended version of Jackie Chan's edit". All scenes taking place in New York & Hong Kong match the HK version and even use the alternative takes that Jackie Chan chose for his edit. And obviously, like Jackie Chan's edit, the nudity has been removed in favor of Jackie Chan's replacement scenes.
    3. All scenes taking place in New York are un-dubbed on the Cantonese/English sountrack. However, the score, dialog, and even some sound effects have been MIXED differently to match this unique edit. Also, the scenes of Billy Wong asking a pedestrian where the bearded crook went and an African-American cop giving verbal support to Billy have a unique ENGLISH dub to them...WITH Jackie Chan's voice! Since these two scenes were not filmed with sync-sound, a dub had to be made.
    4. The Cantonese/English soundtrack on the Extended Version uses the Cantonese dub of the Hong Kong version for ALL scenes taking place in Hong Kong.
    5. The Extended version contains the following scenes that were NOT included in Jackie Chan's Hong Kong edit
      a. Billy Wong & Garoni learning about the massage parlor from a native HK police officer after talking to Superintendent Whitehead.
      b. Billy Wong & Garoni discussing their plans outside of the police station after getting scolded by Whitehead
      c. Benny Garucci & David Ho talking in their car after picking up Garucci from the airport (exclusive to the Japanese version)
      c. Benny Garucci meeting with Harold Ko at Ko's office to exchange money.
    6. Due to the inclusion of these scenes, these scenes required a slightly different Cantonese dub than the Hong Kong version
      a. Billy Wong & Garoni talking to Whitehead. The Cantonese dub of the HK version had Whitehead telling Garoni & Wong about the massage parlor. But because of the inclusion of the next scene where Wong & Garoni talk to the HK inspector, this had to be changed to match the context of the original US version.
      b. Benny Garucci & David Ko talking to each other after Ko leaves the press conference. This was changed to make Benny Garucci not repeat the exact same dialog to Ko later.
    7. Like the HK version, the Japanese cut is still missing the funeral scene
