Something Weird (1967) UPDATED

Post by Darrel_Griffin »

Something Weird (1967)

DVD:
https://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/ ... ?fid=39138

Blu-ray:
https://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/ ... ?fid=39137

---
1. runtime 80:01

The runtime for all current entries on both the DVD and the Blu-ray pages is listed as 84:44. I own the UK 2020 Standard Edition Blu-ray box set, and on my set the runtime is 80:01, with a frame rate of 24fps. It seems likely that the runtimes for ALL current entries on both pages are incorrect, and that they should all be corrected to 80:01. This would need to be done both within each entry, and also in the CUTS section.

My guess is that the runtime information was accidentally copied over from another movie in the set, Moonshine Mountain, which has a listed runtime of 84:44 (although my player reports it as 84:46).

The following pages all list the runtime of Something Weird as 80 minutes:

Blu-ray.com:
https://www.blu-ray.com/Something-Weird/61203/
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Somethin ... ay/166825/

Wikipedia:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Something_Weird_(film)

IMDb:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0062288/technical/

IMDb does not mention any alternate versions either.

---
2. Remove "NTSC" from the Blu-ray page.

I am pretty sure all of the current Blu-ray discs are identical, and that the movie is in HD on all of them. Therefore, in the CUTS section of the Blu-ray page, all mentions of "NTSC" should be removed (however, they should remain in place on the DVD page).

There is often a 2 second discrepancy with runtimes, and to me it seems likely that this is due to there often being 2 seconds of black silence at the end of a movie, which may be included in the reported runtime on some systems and not on others.

In any case, the runtime for Something Weird should be either 79:59 or 80:01, but not the currently stated 84:44.

Updated, changed the runtimes and fixed typos with the director's name. Hopefully I didn't miss anything.

James -

1. I notice that you have updated the DVD runtimes to 79:57. Since I own the UK 2020 Standard Edition box set, which contains only the Blu-rays and not the DVDs, I cannot check the DVD runtimes myself. Can I assume that you have access to the DVD, and that you checked the runtime yourself?

For most of the movies in these box sets, the currently listed runtimes are the same for the DVD as for the Blu-ray. But this is not the case for all of them, e.g. She-Devils on Wheels has a listed DVD runtime of 82:32 and Blu-ray runtime of 82:36.

This difference in runtime between some of the DVDs versus the Blu-rays could perhaps be explained by the DVDs running at 24.000fps with non-drop-frame timecode (with a player in 24p mode) and the Blu-rays running at 23.976fps with drop-frame timecode. The time difference is 3.6 seconds per hour more for drop-frame than for non-drop-frame, which would work out at between 4 and 5 seconds in total in the above cases I mentioned.

2. For the page:
https://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/ ... ?fid=39137

the runtime for the UK 2019 single disc Blu-ray still needs updating in the main listing (currently still listed as 84:44). It is already correct in the CUTS section for this release.

3. For the page:
https://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/ ... ?fid=39136

both entries have Something Weird runtimes of 79:54. Should be 79:57.

4. For the page:
https://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/ ... fid=391444.

the UK box set has a Something Weird runtime of 84:44. Should be 79:57.

5. For the page:
https://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/ ... ?fid=39154

the UK box set has a Something Weird runtime of 84:44. Should be 79:57.

It’s common for DVD and Blu-rays to have a few seconds of difference in runtime, such as this.

Yes indeed. I am just saying that the drop-frame versus non-drop-frame timecode is often the reason for this. Of course there can be other reasons too, such as one disc format having additional black silence at the start and/or end.

Just a reminder that points 2 to 5 above still need addressing.

Also, the page linked to in point 4 seems to be currently missing altogether. When trying to navigate to it, It states: "Unable to find film details".

Your link for 4 was wrong.

Updated. That should be final and I hope not to revisit this as it took up way too much time and was headache inducing.

Point 3 still needs doing - hopefully this should be quick and easy, as it's just one page, with 2 corrections, namely 2 instances of 79:54 -> 79:57.
That should be the last thing, as apart from that, I am not aware of any other issues with any of these pages.

Yes, my link for point 4 was wrong - somehow an extra "4" was appended to the end. I don't know how this happened, as I was copying and pasting these links. Apologies for that.

Yes, this has been lot of work fixing this. I must admit that when I made the original post, I did not realise that it would open up such a Pandora's Box of issues to be corrected! However, it seems that this is an inevitable effect of the way the database is set up, with lots of duplication of data on multiple pages. In theory, I guess the database could work differently, with such information held in one place and accessed by multiple pages. This would make correcting errors much simpler and quicker, as there would be just one piece of data to correct each time, rather than manually correcting every one of the multiple instances. However, this would require a major overhaul of the entire database system, which would be an enormous amount of work, and which might introduce new problems of its own. I know very little about databases myself, so I certainly don't have the expertise required. Realistically, I don't envisage this happening any time soon, so I guess for the foreseeable future we are stuck with the current time-consuming procedures.

Anyway, thanks James for all your work on this so far - just one more small step to cross the finish line!

Not going to look through and find those 2 pages out of all those links as I seriously do not have the time. Maybe someone else can find it and do it.

It should be straightforward. To clarify, it is just this one page:

https://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/ ... ?fid=39136

Within it, there are two instances of the DVDs:

"Something Weird" (1967) (79:54)

that should be:

"Something Weird" (1967) (79:57)

I did previously go through all the other pages for these box sets myself, and as far as I can tell, these two errors on this one page are the only ones outstanding.

Sorry, I don't think I received an email update about this, and I've only just spotted it.

That last remaining correction now looks to have been done - thanks Anthony.

I believe this thread can now be archived :-D
