TURN BACK TIME WINNERS

Tuesday 10th July 2012

Congratulations to Pete Aighton and Peter Bower who both win a copy of Turn Back Time: The High Street courtesy of our friends at Acorn Media. If you were unlucky this time, you can pre-order a copy of this great series from Amazon.

WIN TURN BACK TIME...THE HIGH STREET ON DVD

Monday 25th June 2012

To coincide with the new BBC1 series Turn Back Time...The Family, Acorn Media will be releasing the original series, Turn Back Time...The High Street, on DVD on 2 July 2012. They have provided 2 copies for us to giveaway.

A group of modern shopkeepers and their families have been on the journey of a lifetime – taking over empty shops in a neglected market square in Shepton Mallet to see if they can turn back time for the British High Street.

They have lived and traded through different key eras of history from the 1870s when the high street was born through to the 1970s. On the way they renovate, redecorate and restock according to the customs of the time through Edwardian, the 1930s, World War Two, the 1960s and 1970s. The shopkeepers make up the key trades: the butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker and the grocer. Overseeing it all is an expert Chamber of Commerce headed up by greengrocer and Masterchef judge Gregg Wallace.

Customers however, are trapped in the present day – but they too must learn to adapt to the methods of each decade, whether it waiting for coffee to be roasted, tea to be mixed or butter to be patted.

Meanwhile the shopkeepers must go way back before moving forward, to a time when convenience was far from the first thing on anyone’s mind – simply staying in stock with fresh produce was hard enough – and that’s before the rationing and deprivations of World War Two.

To enter the competition, simply send an email to admin@dvdcompare.net with the subject heading TURN BACK TIME and the following information to go into the draw:
- your full name,
- your postal address (no PO Boxes)

TERMS AND CONDITIONS: The competition is only open to UK residents (DVDCompare.net staff and family are not eligible to enter). Only one entry will be accepted per person. If you enter multiple times, none of your entries will count and will be deleted. Your personal information will remain confidential.

The competition will close on 2 July 2012. Any entries received after that date will not count. The winner will be drawn at random and notified by email after the closing date.

GOOD LUCK!

If you have won one of our competitions in the last six months and have contacted us regarding a missing prize, please accept our apologies.

Our problems are lying with one particular PR company and will no longer be running any competitions from them. We will also be emailing the companies they represent to let them know what is happening.

In the meantime, please bear with us whilst we try to sort the problem out. Winners will not go without and we will organise prizes ourselves if the PR company fails to do anything about the complaints.

We must also say that we work with various PR companies and it is only one that is causing us hassle.

REMEMBER FUKUSHIMA CHARITY SCREENING OF MITSUKO DELIVERS AT ICA MARCH 11TH, 2012

Sunday 19th February 2012

On 11 March 2011, the largest earthquake in recorded history struck off the coast of Japan sending shockwaves across the nation and a tsunami which engulfed much of the eastern seaboard of Japan. The earthquake triggered an explosion at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant.

A year on and Japan still lies in a state of destruction and confusion. In Fukushima, with the unseen damage of the nuclear situation, the emotional scars of the people still living there are unimaginable. There is a certain stigma arising about both Fukushima and its people with the topic itself becoming off-limits. People are feeling isolated and this can not be made to happen. Japan is one nation and to recover from this awful tragedy we need to help give voice to the people of Fukushima and keep them strong.

The Institute of Contemporary Arts will be holding a charity film screening of Mitsuko Delivers on 11 March 2012 at 7pm.

Tickets are £10 and are available at The ICA and Third Window Films. 100% of Third Window Films` profits of the screening will go to a Fukushima-based charity. Third Window Films will also be selling DVDs at the event, with 100% of their sales also going to charity and 100% of ticket sales of all Japanese films playing in their East Winds Film Festival to the Japan Society Earthquake Relief Fund.

WIN CANE TOADS: THE CONQUEST

Sunday 29th January 2012

To celebrate the January 30 release of Cane Toads: The Conquest on DVD and Blu-ray, we are giving away 3 copies of the film on DVD.

Mark Lewis (Cane Toads: An Unnatural History) explores one of Australia’s greatest environmental catastrophes as he follows the unstoppable march of the cane toad across the Australian continent. Despised by many, venerated by some, the toad has occupied a nation’s consciousness achieving both cult and criminal status. Despite its international origin the cane toad has become uniquely Australian – yet, for a world wrestling with the idea that we have irretrievably altered our own ecosystem, its story holds universal relevance.

Featuring a host of engaging characters as well as thousands of toads, Cane Toads is a humorous yet thought-provoking journey into the issue of invasive species.

Sunday 1st January 2012

Studio Canal are releasing WHISPER OF THE HEART for the first time on Blu-ray on 9th January and have kindly provided us with a copy of the Double Play release to give away.

From the creators of the Academy Award-winning SPIRITED AWAY comes a tale scripted by the legendary animator Hayao Miyazaki. Directed by his protégé Yoshifumi Kondo, this film is a simple tale about a young girl who falls in love and learns to believe in herself.

Her name is Suzuku Tsukishima and she is nearing the end of her final year of junior high. An avid bookworm, she devours books while quietly dreaming about becoming a writer. One day, she meets Seiji, a lad who has the ability to both irritate and charm her, often at the same time. He also harbors an unusual ambition: to build violins in Cremona, Italy. Around the same time, she meets a kindly old man who owns an antique shop, who she later learns is Seiji’s grandfather. One item in the store particularly catches her eye – a strange statue of a cat with glittering eyes. Inspired by Seiji’s utter determination to realize his own dream, she writes a story about the feline-shaped sculpture coming to life.
