Mad Max - MGM 35th Anniversary Blu-ray+DVD - CORRECTION DONE

Post by Paul_Rudoff »

Okay, I'm gonna try to explain this without it getting confusing, so bear with me here.

There are, from what I can tell, two MGM Blu-ray + DVD releases for Mad Max (1979).

On your Blu-ray page for the film...
http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/f ... ?fid=17087

...you have this release: "Blu-ray A America - MGM Home Entertainment"

For Disc 2, you don't have any details. It simply says, "The Film (DVD Copy of the Special Edition)".

This entry is linked to this review:
http://www.dvdcompare.net/review.php?rid=2316

That seems to be a review for the release with the cover featuring the large yellow title behind Max. From what I can tell from the review, that release features the MGM Blu-ray disc with the Audio Commentary, "Film Phenomenon" documentary, two trailers, and four bonus trailers. PLUS it contains the DUAL-SIDED DVD that MGM first released in the early 2000s; which is listed as "R1 America - MGM Home Entertainment - Special Edition" here:
DVD: http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/film.php?fid=1368

So, That would be MGM BLU-RAY+DVD #1.

I don't own that release.

The release I just bought would be MGM BLU-RAY+DVD #2, which has the red cover with Max pointing a gun and a spray-painted white title. Here's a photo I took of the case and discs:
https://www.theraffon.net/~spookcentral ... luDVD1.jpg

The back cover lists all of the dual-sided DVD's bonus features, as you can see in this photo:
https://www.theraffon.net/~spookcentral ... luDVD2.jpg

HOWEVER... when you go to play the disc, the Special Features menu only shows the Commentary and Trivia Track. There's a note at the bottom stating, "Additional special features located on the other side of this disc." You can see this in this screenshot:
https://www.theraffon.net/~spookcentral ... luDVD3.jpg

Obviously, you CAN'T flip it over as it's a SINGLE-SIDED DISC!!!

What MGM did for this new "red cover" release is ONLY duplicate Side A from the original DVD, but they never told the art department working on the back cover.

So, below are the specs for the two releases using the information that's already on the Blu-ray and DVD pages on the site. Apologies that these are not in the proper layout, as I'm doing a copy-and-paste of the info already on the site.

I hope this helps provide a complete picture of these two releases.

I'll take this.

Something to point out, the Blu-ray release did receive a single disc release

The 2014 35th anniversary edition with a digital copy:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Mad-Max-Blu-ray/134334/

The 2019 release which drops the digital copy:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Mad-Max-Blu-ray/254350/

So here's what I'm going to do; I'm going to make the MGM Blu-ray a single disc release now (since there *is* now one) and add the additional availability in the Notes.

Apparently, what you have (according to Blu-ray.com anyway) is the Wal-Mart exclusive.

Anthony, I think it would be better to actually make separate entries for this one rather than consolidating them.
Whenever there is a release where the DVD copy has more extras or exclusive extras than the Blu-ray, I think it's best to list them all out on the Blu-ray listing rather than just a "DVD Copy" link.

Misery, for example
http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/f ... ?fid=15456

Underground, for example
http://www.dvdcompare.net/comparisons/f ... ?fid=36320

I'll make separate entries for the MGM Mad Max releases with the differing DVD copies.

I don't know, I think it's better (and tidier) if we just make a link to DVD page(s). That's just how I feel anyway.

With that, the work is done. Check it out and let me know if you have any notes.

It might look tidier, but I think it's better to list out the available extras on one page, especially if there are exclusives on the DVD (besides things like bonus trailers).

I've now added the DVD release found in the anniversary edition Blu-ray/DVD combo pack.
