The only available master of the film is a Digital Betacam tape. This has been digitized as an uncompressed image sequence in 4:2:2 format. While 4:2:2 involves some compression of chroma and luma, the original material does not offer higher fidelity, so there would be no benefit in digitizing it in 4:4:4:4.


After digitization, the film was processed using various noise reduction filters. The image was then upscaled from SD to HD. To restore the original look and feel of the film, the natural noise present in the original release was reintroduced. Without this step, the image would appear overly clean, with smooth and artificial-looking surfaces.


We have tested this approach with audiences in several cinemas using other films, to better understand viewer preferences. People have different memories of how the film looked when it was originally shown in theaters, and it's important that the HD version preserves that same emotional and visual experience, while also meeting today’s technical standards.
