Office (The) - Season 2 AKA The Office: An American Workplace
R1 - America - Universal Pictures

The Film

Ricky Gervais' brilliant satirical look at the goings on of an office is among the best British television has to offer, the series quickly grew and attained worldwide status. And much like previous popular shows from across the pond, such as "Coupling" (2000-2004) and "Men Behaving Badly" (1992-1999) among others have been adapted for an American audience. "The Office" casts a fresh American group of actors and kept the premise largely the same as it's British counterpart. Steve Carell, who found fame in "Bruce Almighty" (2003), "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy" (2004) and the more recent "The 40-Year-Old Virgin" (2005) plays the Gervais character, the manager Michael Scott (names were changed for this version). The loose handheld documentary style and tone of the show is the same but the characters and scenarios have an American feel, with episodes that include a Halloween party among others. The result, I must admit after much trepidation turned out well, in fact I prefer it to the British version, some may call me out as a blasphemous idiot, but on all accounts I think the characters are well rounded and the situations get taken a gradual step further (but not too gradual as to maintain that same level of uncomfortable awkwardness). The first season left me on the fence, it felt too much like a sit-com, some situations didn't seem naturally occurring and felt forced for comedy's sake, perhaps the pressure of adapting an already established hit was hindering the production? Despite this all is not lost on the first season and in fact there were moments of pure hilarity. It wasn't a total let down, far from it, the show 'had legs' as they say in the industry.
In this second season the show hit its stride and found its rhythm. The series seems more naturalistic and the characters are more involved, we are also given a chance to get to explore some of the other supporting characters, something that wasn't really done in the British version considering they only shot 6 episodes per season, in this version the second season was afforded 22 episodes.
The real reason you'd watch a show like this is for the characters, Carell's presence holds this show together like glue. His personality is similar to that of Gervais' character but in this version Michael Scott isn't a total git, he has heart and ultimatley does care for his employees even though he is an idiot most of the time. His sense of timing is brilliant and his understanding of the character allows for some of the series' most memorable moments. Such as the Jan Levinson-Gould (Melora Hardin) kiss storyline that was stretched throughout the series.
Dwight (Rainn Wilson) plays the Gareth (Mackenzie Crook) character, in the British version Gareth was a numb skull, a genuinely stupid person that is not only easy to get a rise out of but is the center of endless amounts of fun for Tim (Martin Freeman). Dwight isn't an entirely stupid character, in fact the differences are that deep down he's quite an evil person, but nonetheless one of the highlights of this show.
Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam (Jenna Fischer) take the Tim and Dawn (Lucy Davis) roles form the British version, and the relationship with these two is also quite similar however here their flirting and feelings for each other are much more obvious. I suppose one can spend the entire day pointing out the differences between these two versions, the bottom line is that there are characters here that almost anyone that has worked in an office can relate to. The show's premise allows for some interesting, awkward and almost always funny outcomes. It's not often a shows second seasons exceeds the first, in the case of "The Office" it is exactly that.
If you're a fan of the British counterpart then perhaps you'd like to give this version a spin as it's certainly worth the effort.

Video

Presented in the show's original broadcast ratio of 1.78:1 widescreen this anamorphic transfer is better than broadcast. The show was shot in digital high definition format and the resulting image is ultra sharp a result of the deep focus those digital cameras produce, it's also clean and features no imperfections, colors are well balanced and skin tones are accurate.

Audio

A single Dolby Digital 5.1 surround track is included for these episodes. Considering this is a dialogue-centric show it's no surprise that the majority of the sound is directed at the front speakers, with the surround not given much attention at all.
