The Film

"Weaponized" is a film that had potential but descended into a mess that did not come together in the end. It doesn't make much sense. I am a huge fan of B-grade action films and B-grade sci-fi films and that is basically what this movie is. It’s not though provoking or amazing in anyway, it’s just pure senseless popcorn entertainment.

The plot is set in the year 2017. You begin on July 4th. Insert your main character, a cop named Walker (Johnny Messner). Walker is involved in an investigation and throughout his research he soon begins to uncover a conspiracy involving a robotic virus. Insert a scientist named Peterson (Mickey Rourke) who tries to help Walker uncover the secrets of a private military contractor that is hell bent on seeking revenge for his dead son by unleashing a devastating new weapon.

The primary problem with this film is that the plot never really knows where it’s going or how it wants to finish. There is so much ground to cover that that in 90 minutes the filmmakers failed to complete a coherent narrative, and even at that runtime it was too long. Not much is really explained and the plot has many unanswered questions throughout the movie. There are too many plot holes that leave viewers confused, or unsatisfied.

The movie felt both rushed and yet also seemed to drag throughout it's 90 minutes. The movie typical basic B-movie action, with some sci-fi thriller elements thrown in that displays some promise but never delivers. For a low budget direct-to-video release there is some decent special effects, but those special effects could not save this film. In the end the movie left me not caring about any of the characters or their plights. In all honesty I have already forgotten it, and that’s the way the movie concludes. It’s been all done before and nothing new is added to make you want to return to it again.

Video

Presented in the original ratio of 2:35:1, the picture is mastered in HD 1080p 24/fps using AVC MPEG-4 compression. There are no flaws with the video. The imagery is crisp, solid, smooth, vibrant in color and something that truly does stand out.

Audio

The plot might have flaws and the execution of the film dies out but the audio is a dynamic force that is memorable. There are no flaws with sound. The English DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 surround (48kHz/24-bit) is breathtaking. Gun play, explosions, dialogue are all crystal clear and stands out in a flawless way. If I was to simply rate the movie on audio, it would ace it. Also comes with subtitles in English for the hearing impaired.

Overall

I wanted to really like this movie, and in a sense, my inner Drive-In B-movie fanatic soul, does. I am a fan of direct-to-video entertainment and "Weaponized" is exactly that. The movie is an action yarn, that gives nothing but simple entertainment value. If one goes in wanting something thought provoking, then you will be majorly let down. Enter this film as a lover of B-grade entertainment and you might be satisfied.
