OVERALL: Draw
Since this is a 1925 silent film, there are several film restorations and also DVD-releases. Some are in 24fps and some in the usual silent frame rate of 18fps (so the running times differ alone with that reason). Variety of music scores are also included.
*2-disc R1 SE from "Fox" is using the "George Eastman House" restoration (! in the liner notes falsely credited to "David Shepard") with a very good results. Trailer and "Outtakes" are also included - along with 1960 version of "The Lost World" (and its extras).
For more info about this release, please read the review Here (John Sinnott/DVDTalk).
*R1 (Image), R2 UK (Eureka), and R4 (Force) are using the "David Shepard" restoration. They´ve Audio commentary, Outtakes, and Photo galleries. Note, that R1 seems to have 5.1 music track, and it´s missing the "Conan Doyle And The Lost World" -featurette.
For more info about this version, please read the review Here (Mark Bourne/DVD Journal).
*If you´re a real fan of the film, you might want to have the R0 SlingShot version (it has some exclusive supplemental materials, and representation of the Kodascope version of the domestic negative).
For more info about the various DVD-releases, please read the comparison Here (Carl Bennett/Silent Era).
*R2 Italy King Kong SE includes this movie as an extra which is why it has been included in the comparison. -
CUTS:
- R0 America- Alpha Video - No cuts as such. Shorter, 69 minute version.
- R0 CE America- SlingShot Entertainment/Lumivision - No cuts as such. Shorter, 64 minute version.
- R1 America- Image Entertainment - 93 min. Several scenes are now expanded in length or appear on home video for the first time (about a 90% restoration of the original film ). Some scenes have not survived, and those scenes are ignored here. Of particular note is footage that is missing from this edition, exists in the Lumivision edition: The shot of the dinosaur’s tail sweeping to the side and knocking several Londoner men off their feet.
- R1 America- Navarre Corporation - No cuts as such. Shorter, 69 minute version.
-
R1 SE America- Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment - (Disc 1): No cuts
(Disc 2): No cuts (24 fps - 76 min). Original 35mm film restored by "George Eastman House". Notes from Glenn Erickson/DVD Savant:
"This presentation is from the George Eastman house, with an original music score by Philip Carli. It's a very different cut than the 1997 Lumivision DVD (also an Eastman restoration) and also different than David Shepard's 2001 Image disc of this feature. All three appear to have unique scenes. Comparing running times doesn't tell us much because the longer versions frequently slow down scenes."
