OVERALL: Draw
The US disc for a superior image, the extras; the Hong Kong disc for having the original Japanese stereo soundtrack albeit downmixed to 2.0 stereo (see below). The English track (which contains all of the real voices of the English speaking leads) seems to have been made in mono.
Note:
The odd 2.00:1 aspect ratio seems to be down to the fact the film was shot in VistaVision. That said, when comparing the image on the US disc with that on the Hong Kong, the latter has more image on the right and a sliver on the bottom but the US gains equally on the left. The raw image aspect ratio on the OCN could very well be 2.2:1 or even 2.35:1.
The original Japanese soundtrack was “Super Space Sound” which was a 4.0 stereophonic surround sound format. -
CUTS:
- R0 Hong Kong- Eastern Star - No cuts (105:15 NTSC)
- R1 America- Shout! Factory - No cuts (105:15 NTSC)
