WIN PUSSY RIOT: A PUNK PRAYER ON DVD

Thursday 7th November 2013

We have a copy of Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer to give away on DVD thanks to Independent Distribution.

As members of the feminist art collective Pussy Riot, three women performed a 40 second punk prayer inside a Russian cathedral. This performance led to their arrest on charges of religious hatred and culminated in a trial that has reverberated around the world and transformed the face of Russian society forever.

Filmed over the course of six months, Oscar-nominated director Mike Lerner and Maxim Pozdorovkin grant us unparalleled access and exclusive footage of the incredible three women, Nadia, Masha and Katia, behind their now-famous colourful balaclavas. As they defend their convictions from within a cage in the courtroom, we learn from their family and friends what transformed these women from political activists into modern day icons.

To enter the competition, simply send an email to admin@dvdcompare.net with the subject heading PUSSY RIOT along with the following information BY 26 NOVEMBER:
- your full name,

THE WICKER MAN: THE FINAL CUT COMES TO DVD AND BLU-RAY...

Monday 7th October 2013

...and you could win one of two copies of the 3 disc Blu-ray release thanks to our friends at Studio Canal.

When a young girl mysteriously disappears on a remote Scottish island, devout Christian Police Sergeant Howie (Edward Woodward) travels there to investigate. He finds a close-knit and secretive pastoral community living on an island paradise, ruled over by mysterious Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee), with beliefs very much at odds with his puritanism. The islanders mock Howie’s attempts to question them about the girl’s disappearance, and put the very foundations of his faith to the test. He begins to fear that the fate of the girl could be linked to the islanders’ failing crops and their belief that only a sacrifice of the highest order will change their luck. As May Day festivities intensify and the islanders’ behaviour becomes more frenzied, Howie’s quest to save the girl becomes a race against time.

STUDIOCANAL have been conducting an extensive worldwide search for film materials for THE WICKER MAN for the past year. Eventually a 35mm release print was found at Harvard Film Archives which director Robin Hardy has confirmed is the cut he had put together with distributors Abraxas in 1979 for the US release. This has been scanned at 4k and used to create the first ever full digital restoration of the film, with Robin Hardy’s guidance.

Robin accepts that film materials for the fabled Long Version or Director’s Cut will probably now never be found: Sadly, it seems as though this has been lost forever. However, I am delighted that a 1979 Abraxas print has been found as I also put together this cut myself, and it crucially restores the story order to that which I had originally intended. This version of The Wicker Man will (optimistically!) be known as The Final Cut.

When asked whether this cut measures up to the fabled original, long version, Robin Hardy puts it most succinctly: The film as I saw it in the editing suite the other day fulfills my vision of what it was intended to convey to the audience.

The Wicker Man: The Final Cut is released on DVD and Blu-ray on 14 October, but to in with a chance to win a copy of the Blu-ray release, simply send an email to admin@dvdcompare.net with the subject heading WICKER MAN along with the following information BY 14 OCTOBER:

This all UK Premiere section reflects the vibrancy and energy in Asian filmmaking today. Ranging from realist dramas to romance, light comedies to spy action thrillers, swordfighting epics to gothic fairytales, the festival aims to balance the representation of Asian countries.

Terracotta Festival 2013 (TFEFF13) will open with Hong Kong action COLD WAR on Thursday 6 June 2013. This year’s edition will also see a return to last year’s Terror Cotta Horror night on Friday 7 June in association with Film 4 Frightfest. The triple bill has now extended to an all-night horror marathon.

The organisers also have added the “IN MEMORY OF” section to mark the tenth anniversary of two of Hong Kong’s best loved and most missed stars: Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui.

Terracotta Festival 2013 will close out at the ICA with “SPOTLIGHT ON: Indonesia”. 11 - 15 June will be an entire week dedicated to Indonesian cinema, from the country\'s freshest emerging talent alongside work by established filmmakers. This new section will bring rare insight into one of Asia’s rising film powerhouses.

Guest actors and directors will be attending the festival to introduce their films, host Q&A sessions and run Masterclasses on various aspects of what it means to be a filmmaker today. Filmmakers in attendance will be announced closer to the festival dates. Further details are available via the Terracotta Festival website.

WIN THE TITFIELD THUNDERBOLT COURTESY OF STUDIO CANAL

Sunday 6th January 2013

To celebrate the 60th Anniversary, Studio Canal are releasing The Titfield Thunderbolt on DVD and Blu-ray on 14 January 2013, and have given us 3 copies of the DVD to give away.

Originally released in 1953, during the Golden Age of Ealing Comedies, The Titfield Thunderbolt was the first Ealing comedy to be filmed in Technicolor and was written by celebrated Ealing regular and Academy Award Winner T.E.B. Clarke (The Lavender Hill Mob, Barnacle Bill), directed by Charles Crichton (A Fish Called Wanda, The Lavender Hill Mob) and starred Stanley Holloway, George Relph, Nauton Wayne and John Gregson.

The film is a wonderful tale of how a community comes together when the British Railways Service announce the closure of the line linking rural Titfield to Mallingford, which they rely on to commute to work and transport their produce to market.

They make a bid to run it themselves, backed by massively wealthy local Valentine (Stanley Holloway), who is instantly attracted to the idea when told that there is a complete lack of alcohol licensing hours on trains!

However, this decision puts them into direct competition with the local bus company, which leads to a whole array of comically genius anarchy, madness and cunning sabotage.

The film has been digitally restored by Pinewood Studios, who spent over 100 hours removing dirt, scratches, hisses and pops from the picture and soundtrack.

You can read my full review of the fantastic Blu-ray release here.

To enter the competition, simply send an email to admin@dvdcompare.net with the subject heading TITFIELD THUNDERBOLT and the following information BY 20 JANUARY:
- your full name,
- your postal address (no PO Boxes)

TERMS AND CONDITIONS: The competition is only open to UK residents (DVDCompare.net staff and family are not eligible to enter). Only one entry will be accepted per person. If you enter multiple times, none of your entries will count and will be deleted. Your personal information will remain confidential.

The competition will close on the date specified. Any entries received after that date will not count. The winner will be drawn at random and notified by email after the closing date.

WIN MARRIAGE LINES AND PRIVATES COURTESY OF ACORN MEDIA

Sunday 6th January 2013

To celebrate the new year, our friends at Acorn Media have given us 2 copies each of Marriage Lines and Privates on DVD to give away.

Marking 50 years since it was first broadcast, this DVD collection brings together the complete series one and complete series three of the groundbreaking marital comedy Marriage Lines. Newly-married George and Kate Starling arrive home from their honeymoon to discover that they have lost their door keys. How they come to meet their new neighbours and events that follow, sets the tone for a series that lovingly explores the perils and pitfalls of love, marriage, anniversaries, petty quarrels and the kind of making-up that is not so hard to do. Series two, and so many more, are irreplaceably lost, but luckily we have uncovered series three, returning to a heavily pregnant Kate and George in their new flat, facing up to the realities of becoming parents – something which Kate takes to with grace and assurance, while George will keep stubbing his toe on the crib in more ways than one.

To enter the competition to win a copy of Marriage Lines, simply send an email to admin@dvdcompare.net with the subject heading MARRIAGE LINES and the following information BY 2 FEBRUARY:
- your full name,
- your postal address (no PO Boxes)

It is November 3rd, 1960 as we follow the last intake of men into National Service at the tail end of conscription. Gangsters, teddy boys, peaceniks, posh boys and one certifiable loose cannon are about to find themselves in Two Section, deafened, blinded, choked and disciplined into one tight fighting machine whether they like it or not. From the food to the beds, from early rising to late watches, from shaven heads to itchy uniforms, they re here to be broken down and rebuilt by the army; but it soon becomes a contest as to which side will break first.
