It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that we have to inform you our site owner Samuel Scott suddenly passed at the young age of 36. His passing was far too early and he will be missed.

Sam had a profound love for movies and it showed in his collection and his devotion to keeping this website alive. If you've met Sam in person or through this site you would have met a wonderful human. Sam has been a good friend to a lot of us.

As it stands, we will be keeping DVDcompare going, since this is what Sam would have wanted. For the time being, operations as usual.

Rest in peace Sam, you will be missed dearly.

TRISKEL RECOMMENDS 25 – 31 MAY - PASSION: A BRIAN DE PALMA THRILLER

Welcome to the sixth edition of ‘Triskel Recommends’, a weekly series in which we recommend films available to stream online.

With Triskel Arts Centre unable to screen movies as a collective experience and people staying at home in self-isolation, we’ve decided to highlight quality films which we think our patrons would enjoy.

Each week we mix movies to rent and movies which are free to view, international and national cinema, all kinds of genres (shorts, documentaries, experimental, B-movies, foreign language), and links to streaming sites and content that we will curate ourselves.

This week, we are highlighting Passion (2012), the much-maligned Brian De Palma thriller that received its one and only ever Irish theatrical screening at Triskel Arts Centre back in July 2013. De Palma has always been a decisive figure in American cinema, his overtly stylised and cinematic approach to filmmaking (as well as his depictions of violence and sexuality) has confounded many critics and caused much controversy. With Passion, even his most strident supporters have been divided, but those willing to indulge in the unconventional approach to filmmaking and storytelling may find this to be a hidden gem, an intentionally ripe melodrama reminiscent of classic Hollywood pictures from the 1940s and ’50s filtered through De Palma’s unique approach to the subject matter.

Around the time of the Passion screening at Triskel, Chris O'Neill wrote an essay entitled ‘Passion: A Viewers’ Guide’, which was published in the much-missed Experimental Conversations, an online publication run by Cork Film Centre. I have republished that essay below, but please view the film before reading.

TRISKEL RECOMMENDS THE EARLY FILMS OF TOBE HOOPER MAY 18-24

The Triskel Arts Centre in association with Watchmaker Films and Louis Black Productions is making available for online streaming THE EARLY FILMS OF TOBE HOOPER, giving an "insight into the earliest work of the legendary horror film director behind such major classics as The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974) and Poltergeist (1982)" with Hooper's first feature film Eggshells (1971) and two shorts The Heisters (1964) and Down Friday Street (1966) available for the next seven days.

Available worldwide, the €5.00 rental package includes the films and the following bonus material:

SEVERIN FILMS AND UMBERTO LENZI GO GIALLO FOR CARROLL BAKER IN JUNE

Although better known in the United States for his gory cannibal films Cannibal Ferox and Eaten Alive, and his horror films like Ghosthouse, late director Umberto Lenzi actually dabbled in the giallo genre before it was redefined by Dario Argento. Although Lenzi worked near the bottom of the barrel budget-wise (and sometimes talent-wise) in the eighties and nineties, his giallo films were picturesque with irresistible casts doing naughty things against jet-set backdrops to groovy scores, and four of them showcased Carroll Baker in her wild Euro period between the likes of Pretty Baby and The Greatest Story Every Told and her Hollywood return with Ironweed, Star 80.

Orgasmo (1969): In their first startling collaboration, Carroll Baker stars as an American widow who arrives at her late husband’s luxurious Italian estate and surrenders to an orgy of ménages à trois, madness, and murder. Writer/director Umberto Lenzi boldly fills the screen with bourgeois depravity, daring sexuality and unnerving twists for the worldwide hit At The Mountain Of Madness calls “so odd, disturbing and well-made, with that delirious giallo feel that’s like a drug.” Lou Castel (A BULLET FOR THE GENERAL), Colette Descombes (MONIKA) and Tino Carraro (THE CAT O’ NINE TAILS) co-star in this landmark psychosexual thriller – released in the U.S. with extra nudity as PARANOIA and also included here – now scanned from the internegative of Lenzi’s Director’s Cut for the first time on Blu-ray.

PARAMOUNT ANNOUNCES UPCOMING VIRTUAL SCREENING EVENTS

Paramount is planning to present a series of virtual screenings that will be streamed online via CYA.LIVE, allowing viewers to watch and interact via text and video with other fans, as well as special guest hosts.

The first event will be a 25th anniversary screening of the comedy classic TOMMY BOY hosted by the film’s director, Peter Segal, whose additional credits include Get Smart with Steve Carell, 50 First Dates with Adam Sandler, Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult with Leslie Nielsen, and more. The event will take place on Saturday, April 18 at 5pm PT.

On Saturday, April 25 at 5pm PT, fans can tune in to watch STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN along with the hosts of the Inglorious Treksperts podcast, Mark A. Altman and Daren Dochterman. Altman is a television and motion picture writer/producer/director, as well as the author of the bestselling two-volume book The 50 Year Mission: The Complete Uncensored, Oral History of Star Trek. Dochterman has worked in the entertainment industry for over 30 years and has more than 80 film and television credits. He is known for his work as Visual Effects Supervisor on the Director’s Edition of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

The third event will feature a screening of director Blake Edwards’ unforgettable classic BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S on Saturday, May 2 at 5pm PT, just two days prior to Audrey Hepburn’s birthday on May 4. The screening will be hosted by Andrea Kalas, the head of the Paramount Pictures Archives.

THE FILM DETECTIVE OFFERS A LAUGH TO SHUT-INS WITH FREE COMEDY/MOVIE MARATHONS IN APRIL

While the theaters may be closed and many confined at home, one thing that offers a bit of respite in times of overwhelming news is the nostalgia of classic film and television.

Beginning April 1, The Film Detective is featuring a collection of classic comics on its live channel and adding more than a dozen comedies to its streaming library of over 1,000 classic film and television titles—and a variety of movie marathons.

April Fools’ Day will showcase the Golden Age’s favorite goofs—including The Three Stooges, Buster Keaton, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis and Abbott and Costello—for 24 hours of laughs on Sling, STIRR and DistroTV.

It wouldn’t be a month of classic comedy without Charlie Chaplin, so TFD is honoring the anniversary of The Tramp’s birthday on April 16! Favorites including The Kid (1921) and The Adventurer (1917) will be featured, as well as the tale of Chaplin’s rise to fame in Chaplin’s Art of Comedy (1966), from legendary independent filmmaker Sam Sherman. Chaplin’s birthday will be followed by a weekend-long marathon of comedy, from Friday, April 17, to Sunday, April 19. In times when everyone could use a laugh, no one fits the bill quite like Chaplin and his comedic peers of yesteryear.

Comedy marathons are only part of the events on TFD this month. To celebrate the 94th birthday of iconic film legend, Roger Corman, Sunday, April 5, TFD is featuring a Roger Cor-Marathon from 3:30 p.m.-midnight ET. A Bucket of Blood (1959), The Little Shop of Horrors (1960) and more will be featured to the delight of fans. Viewers can also enjoy exclusive commentary on Corman's classics from director Joe Dante and Roger Corman himself in Trailers from Hell videos, available on the TFD app.
Additionally, in honor of Easter on April 12, TFD will be stocking its streaming app with religious titles from The Cathedral Films Collection and The Loyola Films Collection, courtesy of Vision Video.

Some of you might be aware that Connecticut has now followed New York and is ordering a business shutdown. This is, of course, going to cause problems for our shipping. Therefore, we're doing a sale THIS WEEKEND ONLY (ends early Monday morning EST) so that anyone who wants to stock up on titles can do so. The goal is to get (hopefully) every order placed out and into the hands of USPS on Monday.

In essence, everything is discounted and additional 15% off of our already reduced prices (except April pre-orders), but here are a few more pertinent bullet points:

1) We are not 'closing down' in the sense that we're going to stop working on restorations, new releases, etc, but we are having to makes some new arrangements in regards to staffing and assisting everyone who's able to work from home. That's our #1 priority right now.

2) No releases are cancelled and no release dates have been changed or pushed back. The only change is to do with SHIPPING orders.

3) The planned May reveal (our first UHD release of 2020) and Halfway to Black Friday Flash Pre-order for next weekend (March 27th-30th) has not changed, so look out for it. We’ll share more details on that throughout the week.

BFI ANNOUNCES PET SHOP BOYS IN "IT COULDN'T HAPPEN HERE" (1987) - FIRST EVER BLU-RAY/DVD RELEASE 15 JUNE

Unavailable worldwide for 30 years, the film has been newly remastered by the BFI from a 4K scan for release in a Limited Edition Blu-ray/DVD set on 15 June 2020.

Originally conceived as an hour-long video directed by Jack Bond based on Pet Shop Boys’ 1987 album "Actually", it became a full-scale feature film with pop surrealism meeting the classic road movie, it features chart-topping singles from the duo’s first two studio albums, including ‘West End Girls’, ‘It’s a Sin’ and ‘Always on My Mind’. As well as a 48-page book containing new writing, the discs will be accompanied by an exciting collection of extras including a brand new feature commentary with Jack Bond, co-writer James Dillon and cinematographer Simon Archer, new interviews and more.

The re-release will be launched with a special preview screening at BFI Southbank on Friday 3 April 2020 at 20:10 in NFT1, preceded by an on-stage Q&A with Neil Tennant, Jack Bond and choreographer Arlene Phillips. Tickets will be listed at the BFI Southbank site on 24 February.
