It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that we have to inform you our site owner Samuel Scott suddenly passed at the young age of 36. His passing was far too early and he will be missed.

Sam had a profound love for movies and it showed in his collection and his devotion to keeping this website alive. If you've met Sam in person or through this site you would have met a wonderful human. Sam has been a good friend to a lot of us.

As it stands, we will be keeping DVDcompare going, since this is what Sam would have wanted. For the time being, operations as usual.

Rest in peace Sam, you will be missed dearly.

Welcome to the sixth edition of ‘Triskel Recommends’, a weekly series in which we recommend films available to stream online.

With Triskel Arts Centre unable to screen movies as a collective experience and people staying at home in self-isolation, we’ve decided to highlight quality films which we think our patrons would enjoy.

Each week we mix movies to rent and movies which are free to view, international and national cinema, all kinds of genres (shorts, documentaries, experimental, B-movies, foreign language), and links to streaming sites and content that we will curate ourselves.

This week, we are highlighting Passion (2012), the much-maligned Brian De Palma thriller that received its one and only ever Irish theatrical screening at Triskel Arts Centre back in July 2013. De Palma has always been a decisive figure in American cinema, his overtly stylised and cinematic approach to filmmaking (as well as his depictions of violence and sexuality) has confounded many critics and caused much controversy. With Passion, even his most strident supporters have been divided, but those willing to indulge in the unconventional approach to filmmaking and storytelling may find this to be a hidden gem, an intentionally ripe melodrama reminiscent of classic Hollywood pictures from the 1940s and ’50s filtered through De Palma’s unique approach to the subject matter.

Around the time of the Passion screening at Triskel, Chris O'Neill wrote an essay entitled ‘Passion: A Viewers’ Guide’, which was published in the much-missed Experimental Conversations, an online publication run by Cork Film Centre. I have republished that essay below, but please view the film before reading.

Passion is currently available to view on MUBI UK & Ireland, who have very generously given Triskel Cinema members a free 90-day subscription to their services. Cinema members should check their inboxes for the link to take advantage of this offer. Not already a member? Then sign up here. We’re extending our membership so you’ll now get 15 months for just €15.

Although better known in the United States for his gory cannibal films Cannibal Ferox and Eaten Alive, and his horror films like Ghosthouse, late director Umberto Lenzi actually dabbled in the giallo genre before it was redefined by Dario Argento. Although Lenzi worked near the bottom of the barrel budget-wise (and sometimes talent-wise) in the eighties and nineties, his giallo films were picturesque with irresistible casts doing naughty things against jet-set backdrops to groovy scores, and four of them showcased Carroll Baker in her wild Euro period between the likes of Pretty Baby and The Greatest Story Every Told and her Hollywood return with Ironweed, Star 80.

Orgasmo (1969): In their first startling collaboration, Carroll Baker stars as an American widow who arrives at her late husband’s luxurious Italian estate and surrenders to an orgy of ménages à trois, madness, and murder. Writer/director Umberto Lenzi boldly fills the screen with bourgeois depravity, daring sexuality and unnerving twists for the worldwide hit At The Mountain Of Madness calls “so odd, disturbing and well-made, with that delirious giallo feel that’s like a drug.” Lou Castel (A BULLET FOR THE GENERAL), Colette Descombes (MONIKA) and Tino Carraro (THE CAT O’ NINE TAILS) co-star in this landmark psychosexual thriller – released in the U.S. with extra nudity as PARANOIA and also included here – now scanned from the internegative of Lenzi’s Director’s Cut for the first time on Blu-ray.

Italian Director's Cut:
• Italian mono with optional English subtitles
• Audio Commentary by Film Critic, Author & Academic Alexandra Heller-Nicholas
US X Rated Version:
• English mono with optional English SDH subtitles
• Audio Commentary by Mondo-Digital’s Nathaniel Thompson & Troy Howarth, Author of ‘So Deadly So Perverse: 50 Years Of Italian Giallo Films’
• "Giallo Fever" interview with Director Umberto Lenzi
• U.S. Theatrical Trailer

SO SWEET, SO PERVERSE (1969): Following the international success of ORGASMO, the second Umberto Lenzi/Carroll Baker collaboration is a kinky retelling of DIABOLIQUE featuring lush Paris locations, trippy flashbacks, a swinging score by Riz Ortolani (MONDO CANE, CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST) and an all-star EuroCult cast that includes Jean-Louis Trintignant (THE GREAT SILENCE, THE CONFORMIST), Erika Blanc (KILL, BABY…KILL!), Horst Frank (THE CAT O’ NINE TAILS) and Helga Liné (NIGHTMARE CASTLE). Executive produced by Sergio Martino (THE STRANGE VICE OF MRS. WARDH) from a screenplay by Ernesto Gastaldi (ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK), this “full-blown classic giallo and one of Lenzi’s best” (B-Mania) is now fully restored in a new 2k scan from the original negative.

• Italian mono with optional English subtitles
• English mono with optional English SDH subtitles
• Audio Commentary by Kat Ellinger, Author of ‘All The Colors Of Sergio Martino’
• "Lenzi’s Lenses" Backstage Chat with the Director at The 1999 Nocturno Film Festival Equilateral Triangle: Screenwriter Ernesto Gastaldi on Lenzi
• Theatrical Trailers
• Alternate Credit Sequence
• BONUS CD: So Sweet… So Perverse & A Quiet Place To Kill Remastered Soundtracks Plus Bonus Track: Knife Of Ice (Main Title Theme)

A QUIET PLACE TO KILL (1970): In her third collaboration with director Umberto Lenzi, Carroll Baker stars as a glamorous racecar driver entangled in a lurid affair with her ex-husband (Jean Sorel of BELLE DU JOUR and A LIZARD IN A WOMAN’S SKIN), his wealthy new wife, and a twisted web of lust, murder and deception. Luis Dávila (EAGLES OVER LONDON) co-stars in this 1970 Italian/French/Spanish co-production – released in Italy as PARANOIA, though not to be confused with the 1969 U.S. re-title of ORGASMO – featuring a taut screenplay co-written by Bruno Di Geronimo (WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO SOLANGE?) and Marcello Coscia (LET SLEEPING CORPSES LIE), plus edgy cinematography by Guglielmo Mancori (WILD BEASTS) with Aristide Massaccesi/Joe D’Amato (ANTHROPOPHAGUS), now scanned from the original camera negative for the first time ever in America.

• Italian mono with optional English subtitles
• English mono with optional English SDH subtitles
• Audio Commentary with Author & Critic Samm Deighan
• "Sex and Conspiracy" interview with Director Umberto Lenzi
• Alternate Credit Sequence
• Alternate Clothed Scene
• Short Deleted Scene

KNIFE OF ICE (1972): From its opening Edgar Allen Poe quote to the insane climactic twist, this fourth and final collaboration between co-writer/director Umberto Lenzi and Golden Globe winner/Academy Award® nominee Carroll Baker is “something quite unique” (Gore Girl), with Baker as a traumatized mute being stalked through the Spanish countryside by a black-gloved sex maniac who may be a member of a Satanic cult. Evelyn Stewart (THE SWEET BODY OF DEBORAH), Eduardo Fajardo (NIGHTMARE CITY), George Rigaud (HORROR EXPRESS, EYEBALL) and Silvia Monelli (YESTERDAY, TODAY & TOMORROW) co-star in this “offbeat and fascinating giallo thriller” (All Movie), now scanned in 2K from the original negative with all-new Special Features.

• Italian mono with optional English subtitles
• English mono with optional English SDH subtitles
• "Carroll and Umberto’s Final Stab" interview with Stephen Thrower, Author of ‘Nightmare USA’
• "Until the Silence Screams" interview with Director Umberto Lenzi
• Theatrical Trailer
• Alternate Credit Sequence

Limited to 1,000 copies, the boxed set is available directly from Severin Films on its own or in the The Lenzi/Baker Bundle with a set of four Postcards and a Paranoia (AKA Orgasmo) T-shirt. UPDATE from Severin: “ Big news! We've managed to procure the infamous original SO SWEET... The heretic has been resurrected!

Director Gianfranco Mingozzi's FLAVIA THE HERETIC is judged the most graphically violent of all ‘nunsploitation’ films, so uncompromising and harsh that it courts the ranks of video nasties while being an undeniably thought-provoking reflection on religious violence and misogyny.

Based on true events from medieval Italy, Flavia (Florinda Bolkan) rebels after being imprisoned in a monastery by her tyrannical father, and joins an invading Muslim army that is retaliating against the crusades. But Flavia’s world becomes filled with murder, rape and torture. Nun, warrior and avenger, Flavia’s will is unshakeable to the death.

Beautifully filmed by Alfio Contini (The Night Porter) with flashes of Jodorowsky-esque surrealism and boasting a score by Oscar-winner Nicola Piovani (Life is Beautiful), this challenging film is released here for the first time in the UK on Blu-ray, uncut and finally doing justice to the searing vision of its filmmakers.

Available directly from Shameless Screen Entertainment

• Interview with actress Florinda Bolkan filmed exclusively for Shameless
• Audio Commentary by genre specialist Kat Ellinger, recorded exclusively for Shameless
• Extensive restoration work carried out in the UK

Tuesday 7th April 2020

While the theaters may be closed and many confined at home, one thing that offers a bit of respite in times of overwhelming news is the nostalgia of classic film and television.

Beginning April 1, The Film Detective is featuring a collection of classic comics on its live channel and adding more than a dozen comedies to its streaming library of over 1,000 classic film and television titles—and a variety of movie marathons.

April Fools’ Day will showcase the Golden Age’s favorite goofs—including The Three Stooges, Buster Keaton, Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis and Abbott and Costello—for 24 hours of laughs on Sling, STIRR and DistroTV.

It wouldn’t be a month of classic comedy without Charlie Chaplin, so TFD is honoring the anniversary of The Tramp’s birthday on April 16! Favorites including The Kid (1921) and The Adventurer (1917) will be featured, as well as the tale of Chaplin’s rise to fame in Chaplin’s Art of Comedy (1966), from legendary independent filmmaker Sam Sherman. Chaplin’s birthday will be followed by a weekend-long marathon of comedy, from Friday, April 17, to Sunday, April 19. In times when everyone could use a laugh, no one fits the bill quite like Chaplin and his comedic peers of yesteryear.

Comedy marathons are only part of the events on TFD this month. To celebrate the 94th birthday of iconic film legend, Roger Corman, Sunday, April 5, TFD is featuring a Roger Cor-Marathon from 3:30 p.m.-midnight ET. A Bucket of Blood (1959), The Little Shop of Horrors (1960) and more will be featured to the delight of fans. Viewers can also enjoy exclusive commentary on Corman's classics from director Joe Dante and Roger Corman himself in Trailers from Hell videos, available on the TFD app.
Additionally, in honor of Easter on April 12, TFD will be stocking its streaming app with religious titles from The Cathedral Films Collection and The Loyola Films Collection, courtesy of Vision Video.

Vinegar Syndrome’s JULY BUNDLE (also sold separately) includes the first title from their MGM deal PALE BLOOD, one really odd Italian and two little-seen Spanish giallo films, and the freaky nineties killer doll film DOLLY DEAREST rescued from out of print, overpriced, fullscreen DVD.

A satisfyingly trashy low-budget Spanish giallo which inadvertently also ranks as one of the country's earliest proto-slashers, León Klimovsky's (The Vampire's Night Orgy) TRAUMA aka Violación Fatal is filled with gratuitous sex and nudity, along with bloody killings. Barely released outside of Spain, Vinegar Syndrome presents TRAUMA on Blu-ray, in a brand new 2K restoration of its camera negative and in its longest version ever presented on home video.
• Region Free Blu-ray
• Newly scanned & restored in 2k from its 35mm original negative
• Original Spanish language sound with newly translated English subtitles
• Historical commentary track with European cult cinema author Troy Howarth
• Promotional image gallery

A unique Spanish take on Agatha Christie's oft-adapted novel, and giallo source material favorite, And Then There Were None, exploitation auteur Javier Aguirre's (Count Dracula's Great Love) THE KILLER IS ONE OF 13 is uncharacteristically literary-in-structure, but never skimps on its requisite bloodshed. Featuring some of Spain's top genre film stars including Patty Shepard (Rest in Pieces), Jack Taylor (Female Vampire), and Paul Naschy in a supporting role, Vinegar Syndrome brings THE KILLER IS ONE OF 13 to Blu-ray, newly restored in 2K from its original negative and available in North America for the first time in any format.
• Region Free Blu-ray
• Newly scanned & restored in 2k from its 35mm original negative

• Historical commentary with author and Editor-In-Chief of Diabolique Magazine Kat Ellinger

The only film credit from 'one-and-done' director, Helia Colombo, THE POLICE ARE BLUNDERING IN THE DARK is a satisfyingly sleazy and decidedly oddball giallo rarity, filled with bloody killings, plentiful nudity, wild plot twists, and plenty of general weirdness. Unseen outside of its native Italy, Vinegar Syndrome presents THE POLICE ARE BLUNDERING IN THE DARK in a fresh, 2K restoration of its original negative and in its first official home video release anywhere in the world.
• Region Free Blu-ray
• Newly scanned & restored in 2k from its 35mm original negative
• Original Italian language sound with newly translated English subtitles

In 1980, Indonesian exploitation studio Rapi Films and writer/director Sisworo Gautama Putra (PRIMITIVES, THE WARRIOR) unleashed the singular chiller that rocked the Muslim nation, transformed the country’s genre film industry, and remains one of the most influential shockers in Asian horror history: While mourning the death of his mother, a troubled teen discovers a nightmare world of restless spirits, supernatural vengeance and occult terror with “an intense creepiness that stands the test of time” (The Jakarta Post). Ruth Pelupessy (THE SNAKE QUEEN) and W.D. Mochtar (MYSTICS IN BALI) star in this “classic from the Golden Age of Indonesian horror” (Monster!) – whose 2017 Joko Anwar remake became an international festival favorite and one of Indonesia’s biggest hits ever – now scanned from the original negative and packed with all-new Special Features.

Special Features:
• "Satan's Box Office" interview with producer Gope T. Samtani
• "Indonesian Atmosphere" interview with screenwriter Imam Tantowi
• "Satan's Slave Obsession" audio interview with remake director Joko Anwar

Produced in 1960 as BODY IN THE WEB, it became a notorious Adults Only feature throughout Europe(though banned in the UK). Three years later and sheared of its nudity, it was repackaged for American audiences as a brain-melting monster movie filled with stripper catfights, skimpy lingerie and radioactive arachnids. Alexander D’Arcy – whose Hollywood career ranged from Leo McCarey’s THE AWFUL TRUTH to Al Adamson’s BLOOD OF DRACULA’S CASTLE – and ‘The German Jayne Mansfield’ Barbara Valentin (BERLIN ALEXANDERPLATZ) star in “the ultimate exploitation movie” (PsychotronicReview.com), produced by Wolf C. Hartwig of BLOODY MOON and SCHOOLGIRL REPORT infamy. A couple of things to note. Due to our distributor being out of service right now, we will only be selling units that are actually in stock at our store, which right now is almost everything released to date that is in print. All item quantities in our webstore have been adjusted to reflect what is in-hand, which ranges from 1 unit to 200 units so QUANTITIES ARE LOW. As of right now, shipping is not limited in Arizona so all orders placed will be shipped first come, first served starting on Monday and will not be withheld and added to existing pre-orders. This means the ADD TO EXISTING ORDER function has been turned off completely while the sale runs. If worldly circumstances beyond our control change, then orders will be shipped when permitted. Our FREE SHIPPING tiers will remain the same during this sale. The whole Severin team thanks you for your loyalty and business during this bizarre time.

Sunday 22nd March 2020

Some of you might be aware that Connecticut has now followed New York and is ordering a business shutdown. This is, of course, going to cause problems for our shipping. Therefore, we're doing a sale THIS WEEKEND ONLY (ends early Monday morning EST) so that anyone who wants to stock up on titles can do so. The goal is to get (hopefully) every order placed out and into the hands of USPS on Monday.

You can read the general sale rundown here: Vinegar Syndrome Pre-Quarantine Sale

In essence, everything is discounted and additional 15% off of our already reduced prices (except April pre-orders), but here are a few more pertinent bullet points:

1) We are not 'closing down' in the sense that we're going to stop working on restorations, new releases, etc, but we are having to makes some new arrangements in regards to staffing and assisting everyone who's able to work from home. That's our #1 priority right now.

2) No releases are cancelled and no release dates have been changed or pushed back. The only change is to do with SHIPPING orders.

3) The planned May reveal (our first UHD release of 2020) and Halfway to Black Friday Flash Pre-order for next weekend (March 27th-30th) has not changed, so look out for it. We’ll share more details on that throughout the week.

4) April titles are still being manufactured! There's a strong possibility that shipping will be delayed, but if you placed (or intend to place) a pre-order for April, be assured that they aren't going anywhere and we'll be sending them out as soon as we possibly can.

Thanks and be safe!

~ Team VS

Perhaps the most offbeat film in the fascinating career of German actor turned exploitation auteur, Ulli Lommel (Tenderness of the Wolves, The Boogeyman) OLIVIA (also known as Prozzie and Double Jeopardy) finds a distinctive blend of slasher, erotic thriller, and straight forward sleaze, seasoned with touches of semi-surrealism. Atmospherically photographed and featuring a moody score by Joel Goldsmith (Man’s Best Friend), Vinegar Syndrome brings this nearly unclassifiable piece of early 80s genre weirdness to Blu-ray, newly restored in 4K from its original 35mm camera negative and presented in its completely uncensored version for the first time on disc.

Frankie and Johnnie Were Lovers /The Mislayed Genie
Inspired by the classic folk song, director Alan Colberg's contemporary reimagining of the great American love tragedy, Frankie and Johnnie Were Lovers follows the tumultuous romance of Frankie (Bond), a successful singer, and Johnnie, her computer whiz, race car loving beau (Rick Lutze), who can't keep his hands off beautiful Mary Bly (Cyndee Summers). Action and eroticism packed, Peekarama presents Frankie & Johnnie Were Lovers in its never on home video hardcore version.

After accidentally summoning up a genie (played by cult character actor Tobar Mayo), a sex-starved young man finds all of his erotic wishes can come true, but soon finds himself embroiled in time hopping orgies, gangster schemes, and other uproarious happenings, all while trying to score the girl of his dreams in The Mislayed Genie. Rene Bond co-stars as a sex-ed teacher whose students take 'family planning' a bit too literally in this never released on English language home video, sexploitation rarity.

“Pornography is there to give you an erection. Erotica is there to give you emotions.” – Tinto Brass

Cult Epics premieres P.O. BOX TINTO BRASS, Tinto’s most explicit film since Caligula, in it’s full Uncut version and boasting a brand new 4K Transfer, packed together with the in-depth documentary ISTINTOBRASS, following the career of the Maestro, available April 28, 2020 as a 2 Disc Ltd. edition, both on Blu-ray and DVD.

Italian director Tinto Brass is known as the absolute master of erotica, creator of works like All Ladies Do It, Frivolous Lola and Paprika. His gift at perfectly portraying the beauty of the female body has made him celebrated by both men and women. And it is precisely the latter category that sends him boxes full of fan letters.

P.O. Box Tinto Brass is a collection of those letters, photos and videos of female sexual fantasies. This erotic comedy by the Maestro himself, with a score by Riz Ortolani, contains a succession of exciting, downright sensational and sometimes even shocking material. Previously unreleased in the US, Cult Epics presents the Uncut version in a 4K transfer with both the original Italian language track and the English dub. This 2 Disc Limited Edition of 2000 Copies includes exclusively the Documentary; IsTintoBrass, and a 48-page Photo book of unpublished images from the Tinto Brass Archives by right-hand set photographer Gianfranco Salis

In this documentary, Tinto Brass talks candidly about his long-life career, from his earliest anarchistic, innovative and experimental art-house films (Whoever Works is Lost, The Howl, Attraction) to the decidedly derriere-obsessed fetishism of his later work. Starting as an assistant to Roberto Rossellini, Henri Langlois and Joris Ivens, he soon found himself at the very beginning of the Nouvelle Vague, discussing cinema with auteurs such as Bresson, Godard, and Truffaut. The biography brings to light an almost forgotten chapter of cinema history, thanks to the analyses of Marco Muller and Gianni Canova, who trace the beginnings on up to the films on power, such as the Nazi-brothel melodrama of Salon Kitty and the infamous Caligula, which was enormously successful with the public. To this very day, Brass remains an icon of erotic pleasure and voyeurism, and his story is revealed in the tales of Gigi Proietti, Serena Grandi, Helen Mirren, Franco Nero and Sir Ken Adam, among others.

• New Restored and Re-mastered 4K HD Transfer
• Interview with Tinto Brass, 1995
• P.O. Box Tinto Brass Poster & Photo video gallery
